Ramachandran phantoms in the brain6/28/2023 He defends this method when he pointed out that ‘in neurology, most of the major discoveries that have withstood the test of time were, in fact, based initially on single-case studies and demonstrations ‘ (page xiii). Contrary to the prevailing practice of studying large groups of diverse subjects, the author prefers a detailed observation of exceptional individuals, and his many breakthroughs demonstrate that this is an effective strategy. The author’s methodology is to study singular unusual patients, and this research approach harks back to the origins of neurology. The author is remarkable for his astute ideas, his simple but effective approach to research, and his groundbreaking neuroscience discoveries. He infuses his narrative with humorous and insightful prose, such as when he discusses Paul, his patient with epilepsy, who ‘was intense and self-absorbed and had the arrogance of a believer but none of the humility of the deeply religious’ (page 180). Like a codebreaker, he deciphers countless brain mysteries and many intractable neurological conundrums. To accomplish this goal, he recounts seemingly endless ‘ true-life stories‘ of fascinating neurological disorders (page xiii). The author of this book, one the leading figures in neuroscience, unapologetically declared that his intention was to write ‘a popular book on the brain’. Ramachandran and Sandra Blakeslee Synopsis

Orwell politics of the english language6/26/2023 If one gets rid of these habits one can think more clearly, and to think clearly is a necessary first step towards political regeneration. As he will later claim that everything now is political, his essay is a call to action, to a resistance to the degenerative effects of poor and inaccurate uses of language. Orwell isn't presenting an inconsequential critique of English language in his essay. But as with the cycle of the drunk, the cycle of poor thinking-poor speaking can be broken. Poor use of language leads to lazy, unoriginal thinking which in turn makes for even more misleading language language. This is the central argument of the essay. The point is that the process is reversible. It becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts. It is rather the same thing that is happening to the English language. A man may take a drink because he feels himself to be a failure and then fail all the more completely because he drinks.

Tore skeie the wolf age6/26/2023 In the eleventh century, the rulers of the lands surrounding the North Sea are all hungry for power. Warfare, plotting, backstabbing, and bribery abound as Tore Skeie skillfully weaves sagas and skaldic poetry with breathless dramatization as he entertainingly brings the world of the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons to vivid life. The Wolf Age takes listeners on a thrilling journey through the bloody shared history of England and Scandinavia, and on across early medieval Europe, from the wild Norwegian fjords to the wealthy cities of Muslim Andalusia. The first major book on Vikings by a Scandinavian author to be published in English reframes the struggle for a North Sea empire and puts listeners in the mindset of Vikings, providing new insight into their goals, values, and what they chose to live and die for.

Proust books in order6/25/2023 Towards the end of his life, his frail, indolent son Marcel, who had lived on his inheritance and had disappointed his family by never taking up a regular job, told his housekeeper Celeste: ‘If only I could do for humanity as much good with my books as my father did with his work.’ The important news is that he amply succeeded. His father, Adrien Proust, had been one of the great doctors of his age, responsible for wiping out cholera in France. Marcel Proust wanted his book to help us. It recounts his quest to stop wasting time and start to appreciate existence. The book tells the story of one man – a thinly disguised version of Proust himself – in his developing search for the meaning and purpose of life. It is a work that intersperses genius-level descriptions of people and places with a whole philosophy of life. What makes it so special is that it isn’t just a novel in the straight narrative sense. It was immediately recognised to be a masterpiece, ranked by many as the greatest novel of the century, or simply of all time. À l’ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs, 1919 The book was published in French in seven volumes over 14 years: Marcel Proust (seated), with Robert de Flers (left) and Lucien Daudet (right), ca. Marcel Proust was an early 20th-century French writer responsible for what is officially the longest novel in the world: À la recherche du temps perdu – which has 1,267,069 words in it double those in War and Peace. |
