The invisible library series6/29/2023 ![]() This is the book where she has to deal with the fallout. However, the previous adventure in The Dark Archive finally punctured her confidence, as she was told a shocking fact that has her questioning all her core beliefs. This sets her apart from those heroines, who flap around in a soup of self doubt and end up backing into situations they’re not prepared for. And throughout all her entanglements with both fae and dragons, she has kept her head and dealt with life-threatening emergencies with a capable coolness. Irene has intrigued me, as being admirably self possessed. ![]() ![]() REVIEW: Not only does this story have to deliver yet another interesting and twisty plot featuring Irene and her comrades in her ongoing task to carry out the Library’s wishes – it also has to successfully wrap up this series. ![]()

Bowling alone by robert d putnam6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() The same spirit pervades every act of social life. To punish misdemeanors which they have themselves defined. Wonder woman greg rucka omnibus6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() I will say that it does have some pretty glaring missteps in hindsight: sacrificing both of the Kapatelis’ to Cheetah’s character was poorly thought out, and the run can feel very weird to read without also reading Azzarello’s run, which it was trying to erase. Steve and Etta are finally important characters again for the first time since…Messner-Loebs, I think? They were there for a hot minute under Simone’s pen, right? And Veronica Cale is given a much better motivation than Rucka’s first run where she was Lex Luthor without the history, showmanship, competence or cool mech suit. While not as good as Rucka’s first run, this book is still exceptional with a good story and a great reframing of several key players. An excellent return to form and the washing away of at least one of the hated new52 retcons, Rucka’s second go is an excellent story and a good modern reimagining of Diana’s origin while also doing some very heavy lifting while juggling the retcons. ![]()

The Silence of Stones by Jeri Westerson6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() In the eighth installment, Crispin awakens after a night of debauchery in a bed he doesn't recognize. And this series is very much in the hard-boiled tradition, even if it is set seven centuries in the past. Crispin Guest, a former knight (he was expelled from the brotherhood for his alleged part in a conspiracy against King Richard II), is what we would call in modern parlance a private eye. ![]() Agent: Joshua Bilmes, Jabberwocky Literary. Several unlikely plot developments and superficial characterizations make this one of the weaker entries in the series. Afraid that he will be charged with her murder, Crispin flees so that he might catch the culprit, but he's soon in custody, leaving his teenage apprentice, Jack Tucker, to work the case. The next morning, Crispin discovers Elizabeth has been strangled. Ignoring his warnings, she plies him with more drink, and the two fall into bed together. Crispin uses the instructions on the parchment inside the pouch to locate the target, Elizabeth le Porter, who recognizes him as a heroic former knight. When a stranger shoves a bulging money pouch at Crispin, telling him that a woman must be dead that very night, he realizes that he's been mistaken for a hired killer. Westerson's lackluster ninth medieval noir (after 2015's The Silence of Stones) finds investigator Crispin Guest in his favorite London tavern, the Boar's Tusk, feeling the effects of drinking too much wine. ![]()

The north water by ian mcguire6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() This longevity, surely, is due at least in part to our fascination with the sea itself, and in particular to its hold on the imagination of authors. Among readers, clearly, there is an abiding appetite for tales of the sea, but that alone can hardly account for a continuity of tradition that has few if any equals among literary genres. ![]() Yet it is as a "mariner" that he is introduced in that novel's full title, and he undertakes not one but two ill-fated voyages before the one that leads him to his desert island.įrom Defoe the lineage of maritime fiction can be traced almost without interruption to the end of the 20th century – the last complete novel in Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series appeared in 1999 – though its apotheosis, many would argue, was reached in 1851, with the publication of Moby-Dick. The eponymous hero of Robinson Crusoe, widely regarded as the first novel in English, is all but synonymous with the figure of the island castaway. For as long as there have been novels there have been novels of the sea. ![]()

Princess irene and the goblins6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() When her hand fell on the lock, again the old lady spoke: She turned across the passage, feeling her way to the other door. Before she had time to think another thought, she heard her voice again, saying as before: 'Come in, Irene.' From the sound, she understood at once that she was not in the room beside her. She remembered, however, that at night she spun only in the moonlight, and concluded that must be why there was no sweet, bee-like humming: the old lady might be somewhere in the darkness. Every little girl knows how dreadful it is to find a room empty where she thought somebody was but Irene had to fancy for a moment that the person she came to find was nowhere at all. She grew frightened once more, thinking that, although the room was there, the old lady might be a dream after all. But the room was quite dark and there was no sound of the spinning-wheel. The princess opened the door and peeped in. 'Come in, Irene,' said the silvery voice of her grandmother. 109350 The Princess and the Goblin - Chapter 15 George MacDonald ![]() |
